The Not Quite Write Prize for Flash Fiction challenges writers to create an original piece of flash fiction based on two typical writing prompts plus one anti-prompt.

What’s an anti-prompt?

It’s a call to break a specific rule of writing. You know, those things you must never do if you hope to be a successful writer? Well, this is your chance to prove ‘em wrong.

Participants will compete for AU$2,000 in cash prizes, including AU$1,000 for the winner, cash prizes for the entire shortlist and two bonus ‘wildcard’ prizes.

The competition will commence at midday 12.00pm AEDT Friday 19 January 2024 (Sydney, Australia time).

Entrants will have until midnight AEDT on Sunday 21 January 2024 to submit a 500-word piece of original fiction in response to the given criteria.

When the competition kicks-off, the prompts will be announced by email and posted to the Participant Lounge.

Entrants will receive details about how and where to submit their entry when the competition opens. They’ll also have access to the exclusive Participant Forum, to swap beta reads and discuss ideas.

The competition is open to all ages and levels of ability all over the world. Parents and guardians should note, however, that entries are not censored, and young entrants may be exposed to themes and language inappropriate for their age.

The Not Quite Write Prize for Flash Fiction challenges writers to create an original piece of fiction based on two typical writing prompts plus one anti-prompt.

THE PROMPTS

  1. Your story must feature the word RITE. This word must be used in full, with no spaces or interrupting punctuation, however it may be included within a longer word provided the original spelling is retained. E.G.: SPRITE or TRITE.
  2. Your story must feature the action of “crossing a line.” You don’t need to use this exact wording and you can feature the action prominently or simply as an aside. The action may occur before the beginning of your story or after it ends as long as it’s referenced somewhere within your story.
  3. Your story must break the rule “avoid all adverbs.” You can interpret this anti-prompt in whatever creative way you see fit. Your goal should remain to tell the best story possible.

Select the button below when you are ready to submit.

The competition closes at midnight on Sunday 16 July 2023 AEST.

Guys, you broke the rules AND our inbox. We’ve been absolutely inundated with 692 entries from all over the world.

That’s 415,200 words for our judges to read! Please excuse us while we regally faint onto a chaise lounge (Amanda) and quietly curl up in the foetal position (Ed).

We know first-hand how hard the wait can be, so we’ll be working hard to get the good news to the worthy winner as soon as possible.

At this stage, we’re still aiming to honour our planned announcement date of 5pm Sunday 27 August (AEST “Sydney time”). If that changes, we’ll update this page.

We’ll also be discussing the compeition up until the announcement, so subscribe to Not Quite Write on your podcast platform of choice and join the conversation.
